Pokemon by Nazzirithe

So 2016 will mark the 20th anniversary of the almighty Pokémon franchise. Starting out as a humble black and white RPG for the GameBoy, I don't think anyone back then would have expected it to go on and produce, a video game series spanning multiple generations which has sold over 270 million units, a massive collection of toys, mangas, a successful tv series and almost 20 feature length movies, and of course the trading card game. All of which has amassed a staggering $40billion+ fortune in sales!
Since I grew up with the first generation of pokemon games and cards, I am one of those who considers that to be the 'true' pokemon generation and I am completely aware that my opinion is and always will be biased in that way. The original Pokemon will always seem cooler to me.

Anyway enough of that. Going back to the 20th anniversary thing. I recently dug up my old Pokemon card collection when I was clearing out my room and that feeling of nostalgia completely took over me. I started playing FireRed again and reading about all sorts to do with the first generation Pokemon, the designs, facts and secrets about the games etc. Just reminded me of something I loved as a kid, and countless memories always come flooding back. The trading, the battling, the showing off your collections.. you actually looked forward to school because of those things. I remember one kid in school who had the only Charizard and there would be people literally going looking for him out on the playground just to see it. Pokemon cards actually got banned from my school because of people stealing other people's cards. This didn't stop kids bringing them into school though, you'd think we were dealing drugs the way we had to hide them from teachers all the time in class and on the playground. But for me that just added to the excitement.

Being that the 20th anniversary is coming, the value of these cards (particularly the first generation) is going to shoot up. I have a feeling there is going to be an incredible amount of hype about Pokemon over the next year. Seeing how crazy people are already going for these cards encouraged me to set out on a mission - start collecting again and aim to have some complete sets to sell next year for a nice profit! I have recently seen sets being sold for anywhere between £60-190 on Ebay.
Having sorted through my cherished collection, I listed what cards I have and what I need to complete the original sets (mainly the Base, Fossil and Jungle sets). I have been searching online listings almost daily to track down what I need for a fair price, while also selling cards I don't need. I have to admit, despite feeling like such a huge geek, going through this nostalgia trip and collecting again is still exciting. Especially with the added element of trying to collect them before the anniversary madness, and also the money involved. Hopefully I will be able to make a sweet profit on these next year.. though there is the very real possibility I will get too sentimental and end up keeping them!

Depending on how much interest this posts gets over the course of the next few months, I may update on the status of my collection and how my buying and selling is going. Also, if you're a big pokemon fan and have anything to say, if you're collecting yourself, what your favourite card(s) / sets are etc, then feel free to share thoughts and comments!
And if you have taken the time to read my post, thanks! TBC..
